The early childhood education programs comprises of center based centers, head start programs, nursery schools preschool and prekindergarten and other childcare programs. There has been an increase in the enrollment of children in certain age groups than in others. For instance, the percentage of children who enrolled in center based childcare rose to 60 percent in 1999 from 53 percent in 1991 but then it decreased to 53 percent in 2005. Also, there has been an increase in enrollment of children from non-poor families than poor families. Over the years observed, the difference in enrollment was 15 percent in 2005. (Condition of Education 2007)
Another important trend noticed was “…a greater percentage of Black and White children than Hispanic children participated in center-based programs…” (Condition of education 2007). These data represent the increase in the number of children who need education. It is an indicator that more childcare centers are needed to meet the educational needs of the nation.
